What you need to know
- Your Usage screen is the source of truth for your account.
- Task size, model, reasoning, context, and execution location affect usage.
- Use the displayed reset time instead of estimating it.
What the five-hour window is
Some Codex plans show a shorter rolling usage window alongside a weekly allowance. It is an allowance window, not a fixed message count: a small edit and a long agentic task can consume very different amounts.
Where to check it
Open Settings → Usage in Codex or ChatGPT. In an active Codex CLI session, use /status. Record the exact reset date and time shown for your account.
What to do when it runs out
Review the options shown for your account. Depending on plan and availability, that can mean waiting, adding credits, applying an available reset, or upgrading.
Usage rules can change. We review OpenAI's Codex plan guidance and its documentation for banked resets. Your Settings → Usage screen remains the source of truth.
